I’ve had several people ask me about ways to support the YouTube channel or this Substack directly, so the other night I set up a single basic Buy Me a Coffee account for both the YouTube channel and this Substack.
Pretty much everything I said in a community post about BMaC applies here to Substack as well. Another Boring Article is an offshoot of the YouTube channel that I cofounded, and I am very slow to produce new long-form articles, just as I am new tech history videos.
I have resisted setting up Substack memberships because (among other things), I currently don’t feel comfortable regularly charging people for content that is released irregularly.
I know a lot of people are fine with paying for irregularly released content, and I am open to being convinced, but right now I just don’t feel that a Substack that is doing good to release two original long-form articles a year…should be regularly charging.
Someone on the YouTube community post mentioned that Patreon allows you to charge per piece of content, instead of on a regular schedule, and that might be something that I look into later.
For right now, I’m sticking with Buy Me a Coffee. It seems more focused on single donations, and is 100 percent optional. I have no plans to gatekeep any content on the Substack and there are no perks for donating, apart from a heartfelt thank you from me to you.
If you feel like tossing a coffee or two my way after reading anything I’ve written, and can spare the change, then head on over there. Otherwise please feel free to keep reading, sharing, and (hopefully) enjoying this quiet little corner of the Internet for absolutely no charge.
Regards,
Jonathan
